Eagles Mornin Star

Redneck Chick Today is a sad day for me and my family. Eagles Mornin’ Star lost her battle with a leg infection and was put to rest yesterday. She had a long life of 19 years and I will never forget the bond we shared.
Star came to us after being auctioned off a couple times in Eastern Idaho. She had mangled her legs pretty good on some barbed wire and was never properly cared for. I believed she called to us and when our friend said she had a wonderful *kids* horse, we bought her. The first horse we had ever paid for.
The day we brought her home was a beautiful autum day. Redneck rode her to my mom’s where she was to stay until we could haul her home. She looked so beautiful yet so sad when she got there.
We worked on her legs for a week or so and they really got to looking and feeling better. We also got her hauled home and she was doing well. Her first winter with us was hard and I was worried about her but she proved to be a tough ‘ol girl. dsc02777.JPG
We got to spend many wonderful hours on her and just loving her. Her legs told of a hard life she had led and we just wanted to let her know that no all humans are mean. I think she understood but horses have a long memory and never quite lost that sadness.
The move to Oklahoma was a hard one for Star. She traveled well but just couldn’t adjust to the climate and all the damned bugs that ate her up no matter what kind of chemicals we used. It would work for a day or so and then she’d be full of ticks again. I didn’t get to see her too much the last 6-8 months since we lived so far away from her and fuel/money has been tight.
I know she is in a better place but I can’t help but wonder if…if I could have done more? Was she the horse in my dreams wanting to be set free? Had she been in pain for too long? And only on her last walk did she ever limp.
Horses touch our lives in so many ways. I will never forget my times with her and our bond. My soul tells me that she’s happy and healthy now but my heart yurns for one more ride…one more hug…just one more breathe of her.
I will forever love you Eagles Mornin’ Star dsc02569.JPG
THE HEART OF A HORSE
When your day seems out of balance and so many things go wrong…
When people fight around you and the day drags on so long…
When parents act like children, in-laws make you think “Divorce”…
Go out into your pasture…and wrap your arms around your horse.
His gentle breath enfolds you, and he watches with those eyes
He may not have a PhD, but he is, oh so wise!
His head rests on your shoulder, you embrace him oh so tight.
He puts your world in balance, and makes it seem all right.
Your tears they soon stop flowing, the tension is now eased.
The garbage has been lifted, and you’re quiet and at peace.
So when you need the balance from circumstances in your day…
The best therapy that you can seek…is out there eating hay!!

A HORSES PRAYER
Feed me, water me and care for me.
When my days work is done provide me with shelter, a clean dry bed,
and a stall wide enough to lie down in comfort.
Talk to me, your voice often means as much to me as the reins.
Pet me sometimes, that I may serve you the more gladly and learn to
love you.
Do not jerk the reins and do not whip me when going up hill.
Never strike, beat or kick me when I do not understand what you mean,
but give me a chance to understand. Watch me and if I fail to do your
bidding,
see if something is wrong with my harness or my feet.
Examine my teeth when I do not eat. I may have an ulcerated tooth
that is very painful.
Do not tie my head in unnatural positions,
or take away my best defense against flies by cutting off my tail.
Don’t smoke in my barn or leave me tied overnight and
perhaps burn me to death while you are sleeping in your comfortable
bed.
And last, my master when my strength is gone,
do not turn me out in a pasture with no shelter and let me freeze to
death,
or sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly starved or worked to
death.
Take my life in the kindest way, and your God will reward you -
hereafter.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
